How to Flash OnePlus with MSM Download Tool (Unbrick via EDL)
MSM Download Tool flashes complete stock firmware directly to OnePlus and Oppo devices via Qualcomm's low-level EDL (9008) mode — bypassing Android entirely. Use it to recover hard-bricked devices, restore factory firmware, or remove custom OS installations that no other tool can touch.
Pre-Flight Checklist
Complete ALL items before proceeding. Skipping any step increases the risk of bricking your device.
-
Backup all data — MSM Download Tool performs a complete wipeMSM flashing restores the device to factory state. All user data, apps, and settings will be lost. Back up via OnePlus Switch or Google Backup.
-
Correct MSM Tool package for your exact OnePlus / Oppo modelEach model requires a dedicated MSM Tool ZIP that bundles the correct firmware and the tool itself. For example, MSM8998 for OnePlus 5/5T, MSM6150 for OnePlus 7 series. DO NOT use a package intended for a different model.
-
Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 / EDL drivers installedInstall Qualcomm USB drivers (QHSUSB_BULK / QDLoader 9008 drivers). The device must appear as "QHSUSB__BULK" in Device Manager when in EDL mode.
-
Windows 10 64-bit PC with Microsoft .NET FrameworkMSM Download Tool is Windows-only. .NET Framework 4.5 or higher is required.
-
Antivirus temporarily disabledSecurity software blocks MSM Tool binaries. Disable before extracting and running.
-
Device battery above 30% (if possible)Even if the device appears dead, MSM Tool can often flash it. Battery level is less critical in EDL mode, but a charged device is more reliable.
Guide Steps
Extract the MSM Tool ZIP to a folder with no spaces in the path (e.g. C:\MSMTool). The package contains:
MsmDownloadTool V4.0.exe(or similar) — the main tool- Firmware partition images (rawprogram, patch files)
- Firehose programmer file (
.elfor.mbn)
Install the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 drivers. After installation, open Device Manager and confirm the drivers are installed under "Ports (COM & LPT)" or "Qualcomm HS-USB".
When your OnePlus is in EDL mode, it should appear as QHSUSB__BULK in Device Manager. If it shows as "Unknown Device", the driver is not installed correctly.
Right-click MsmDownloadTool V4.0.exe (or your version) and select "Run as administrator".
The tool opens showing target device info and a Start button. Do NOT connect the device yet.
oppo1234, oneplus, or r1qmp. Check the source where you downloaded the package.EDL (Emergency Download) mode is a low-level Qualcomm recovery mode. To enter it on OnePlus devices:
- If device is on: Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power for 10 seconds, then connect USB.
- If device is off (most reliable method): Hold Volume Up + Volume Down simultaneously and plug in the USB cable.
- Via ADB (if device boots): Run
adb reboot edlfrom a terminal.
In EDL mode, the device screen stays black. Verify in Device Manager that it appears as QHSUSB__BULK.
With the device in EDL mode and connected, click Start in MSM Download Tool. The tool detects the device and begins flashing automatically — you'll see partition names and progress percentages updating in real time.
Flashing via MSM Tool typically takes 5–15 minutes depending on firmware size.
When all partitions have been flashed, MSM Download Tool shows Download Complete. The device reboots automatically into the freshly flashed stock ROM.
First boot may show the OnePlus/Oppo logo for several minutes — this is normal.
Complete the Android setup wizard. Then verify in Settings → About Phone → Software information that the firmware version matches your expected stock ROM.
Congratulations! Flash Successful!
You've successfully completed all steps. Your device should now be running the new firmware. If it's booting normally — you're done! Check the troubleshooting section below if you encounter any issues.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Common errors and their solutions. Read this before asking for help.
Most common causes: EDL driver not installed (device shows as Unknown Device in Device Manager), wrong EDL key combination for your model, or using a charging-only USB cable. Try a USB 2.0 port. Try the Volume Up + Down method while plugging in. Run the tool as Administrator.
MSM Tool packages from different sources have different passwords. Common ones: oppo1234, oneplus, r1qmp. Check the download thread or source where you obtained the package — the password is always supplied with the tool.
The firehose programmer file is incompatible with your device's chipset or bootloader version. Ensure you are using the MSM Tool package specifically built for your exact OnePlus model and variant. Using a package for a similar but different model (e.g. OP6 package on OP6T) will fail.
Yes — this is MSM Tool's primary purpose. Even a completely dead OnePlus that won't power on can usually be restored via EDL mode and MSM Tool, as long as the hardware (eMMC/UFS storage) is not physically damaged.
Some Oppo and Realme devices share the same Qualcomm EDL architecture and have community-built MSM Tool packages. However, these are not official and carry more risk. For Realme, the official Realme Flash Tool is a safer option for supported models.
