Step 1: Identify Your Chipset and the Right Tool
The flashing tool you need is determined by your device’s chipset, not its brand. Check Settings → About Phone for the processor name, or look it up by model number, then match it below:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon: QFIL or QPST for EDL flashing
- MediaTek (MT6xxx/MT8xxx): SP Flash Tool or the open-source MTKClient
- Samsung (Exynos or Snapdragon): Odin or the open-source Heimdall
- Unisoc / Spreadtrum: SPD Upgrade Tool or ResearchDownload
- Rockchip: RKDevTool
- Google Pixel: the official Android Flash Tool or Fastboot
- Motorola: RSD Lite or flashfile.bat / CFC XML
- Huawei: Dload (UPDATE.APP), HiSuite, or eRecovery

Step 2: Universal Pre-Flash Checklist
- Back up your data. Nearly every flashing method wipes user data. Back up contacts, photos, and app data first.
- Charge to at least 50%. A power loss mid-flash can hard-brick a device.
- Download firmware only from official or verified sources. See the Firmware Index for where to find legitimate firmware per brand.
- Install the correct USB drivers for your chipset before connecting the device — this is the single most common cause of “device not detected” errors.
- Use a reliable USB cable and a USB 2.0 port where possible. USB 3.0 ports and hubs cause detection issues with several flashing protocols.
Step 3: General Flashing Steps
Once you’ve matched your chipset to a tool above, the specific guide will have exact steps and screenshots — but broadly, every method follows this shape:
- Install the flash tool and its matching USB/chipset drivers.
- Power off the device completely, then boot it into its special flash mode (Download Mode, EDL, BROM, Fastboot, or Recovery — the key combination is device-specific).
- Connect via USB and confirm the tool detects the device.
- Load the firmware file(s) matching your exact model and region.
- Start the flash and do not disconnect the device or close the tool until it reports success.
- Let the device complete its first boot, which can take several minutes longer than a normal restart.
Troubleshooting
- Tool doesn’t detect the device: reinstall the chipset-specific USB driver, try a different cable and a USB 2.0 port, and confirm the device is actually in the correct flash mode (not just powered on).
- Flash fails partway through: re-download the firmware (it may be corrupted) and verify its checksum if one is provided.
- Device bootloops after flashing: most tools have a “full wipe” or “format” option distinct from a standard flash — retry with that enabled.
